The Story Behind “Is It You?”

In 2011 I recorded an album of songs I’d been holding onto for a long time, and “Is It You?” was one of the love songs on it. I’ve always loved the movie Somewhere in Time — that beautiful, aching story of a love that reaches clear across the years to find the one person it was meant for. Something about it never left me, and I wanted to write a song that lived inside that same feeling: the idea that somewhere out there is a soul you’ve been searching for your whole life, maybe even before you knew to look.

So at its heart, this song is really just one hopeful question asked over and over — Is it you I’ve waited for all my life? Is it you, lost somewhere in time? It’s about the searching, and the quiet faith that you’ll know when you finally find it — that you’d swim every ocean and climb every mountain peak to become the one they’d answer “yes” to. I recorded it more than a decade ago now, but it still means the world to me. I hope it finds you right where you are.
